Since my laptop’s hard drive went into cardiac arrest a couple of days ago, I’ve been unable to access my music files (this will only get resolved when I go home at the end of the month). Thankfully, I keep backups of most new albums on my 6-year old 5th gen classic iPod…fingers crossed that that doesn’t break down too!
One of the albums I’ve been giving a good few more spins in the intervening time is powerhouse female duo Davichi’s comeback EP Love Delight. To most non-Kpop listening people, the album will smell like a wheel of Brie - light ‘n’ easy melodies gliding smoothly over the sort of drum-machine beat that went out of fashion in the ’90s…and therein lies the clue as to why I find the album such a compelling listen.
It reminds me of the Canto/Mandopop I grew up with - big ballads that would get you heading straight for the nearest karaoke to belt out with much aplomb, preferably after a few beers. Nostalgia or not, Love Delight is definitely an album that never fails to put a smile on my face - all those wannabe girl groups definitely have a thing or two to learn from Davichi.
