In the space of a year or two this Hokkaido-born band have shot into the big leagues - mainstream acceptance, chart hits and even an appearance on Music Station, much to my surprise and delight.
Certainly, the quartet have never let all that success cloud their creativity or water down their sound and DocumentaLy neatly continues in that fashion, offering up another potent, heady mix of sleek & catchy New-Wave influenced electropop. From the exhilarating 『バッハの旋律を夜に聴いたせいです。』 (It’s ‘cos I Listened to Bach’s Melodies at Night) to the surprisingly downbeat, affecting 流線 (Streamline), Yamaguchi’s songwriting is both mature and varied, offering up something new at every turn.
Just a couple of listens in and DocumentaLy is potentially shaping up to be one of the best albums of the year. It’s just seriously good stuff that everyone, or at least you, should go and check out.
correction: Sakanaction’s...quintet, not quartet. But yes,
